Assets tax Switzerland
Liable to assets tax are the net assets which are calculated as the difference between all of the assets (money, investments, real property, etc.) and all of the liabilities (mortgages, loans, etc.). Every natural person who lives or works in Switzerland must pay assets tax once a year. Assets tax has been abolished at a Federal level.
Just as with income tax, the tax rate for assets tax is progressive in most cantons. Exceptions are the cantons of Schaffhausen and Obwalden. These have a degressive tax rate for high levels of assets. Assets tax is between 0.2 and 3 thousandths depending on the canton and the amount of assets.
The cantons grant tax-free amounts.
